As with anything, isolate. "The United States has so many problems" is rather broad; narrow this down! List specifics, and then we can discuss possible answers on an individual basis.As for perfecting democracy... like communism, democracy can be an ideal state if allowed to run as it is supposed to run. But Man's greed gets in the way. That's the root of the problem, greed and commercialism. Especially greed: commercialism springs from it. I haven't a clue what to do about human nature, though. Democracy, rule by the people, only works when the people actually care about what happens in the government. I think apathy about government is one of America's biggest problems, right up there with serious moral decline. Every citizen needs to be informed, to be active in politics, to make their elected representatives responsible for their actions. If you don't speak up, you're not going to get heard. I hoped that people would take a more active role in government after September 11, but it hasn't happened. As yet, I'm too young to vote, but I'll vote in every election as soon as I turn 18.If anything is killing American democracy, it's apathy. People just don't realize that government affects them too, that there is something beyond their own comfortable lives.
