OK, here's one of my favorite pics. This is a shot looking at what is commonly referred to as "The Milky Way." Actually, this is the name of our Galaxy; our wonderfully average little Sun and it's accompanying solar system (this means us, folks) is located in the outer part of one of the spiral arms. (This is for you, Lord Wicked: the name of the arm we are in is the Orion Arm.)

Anyway, being in the "suburbs," so to speak, gives us the chance to look in toward the heart, or nucleus, of our Galaxy. This is what this picture shows: a view toward the middle, (the "width" being approximately 10,000 lightyears, I believe. The "length" of the galaxy is 100,000 lightyears--this photo only shows a portion of that). The heart of our galaxy lies in the direction of Sagittarius, The Archer. (If you're looking for it, this constellation looks like a giant teapot.)

The central bulge, or nucleus, is made up of millions upon millions of stars, all relatively "close" together. Since all the stars in our galaxy revolve about a center of gravity (like our solar system revolves around the sun, its "center of gravity"), and since gravity is strongest in any object near its center, it is theorized that there is a giant black hole in the center of most galaxies, including our own.
