Well, you see in the movie he drops it when he falls, so I assume he ran before gaurds show up and overwhelm him. It wasn't worth the time to get the lightsaber, so he left it. Plus, why would he need it on Dagobah?

Hmmm...
Since all he had to do was extend a hand and ZAP the lightsaber would be there, I don't think that's it.
I think he let it go because he was feeling such a failure, unworthy of the lightsaber. Perhaps all he could sense was the encroaching Darkness, which he had to hide from so as to remain alive to teach Luke when the time came. Maybe the Dark Lords can "sense" the presence of jedi through their link with their sabers?
